AFD recognizes the expertise that local authorities have gained in implementing the local Agenda 21 (action plans for sustainable territorial development involving all stakeholders in order to combat climate change in urban areas), and consequently develops projects that bring together French and foreign local authorities for low-carbon urban development projects.
Innovative projects
AFD is supporting the municipality of Curitiba, the capital of Paraná State in southern Brazil, in a long-term process that aims to reconcile the development of housing and transport with the preservation of the urban environment. Similarly, AFD is supporting the city of Bangkok’s climate plan by providing technical assistance to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. In China, AFD is supporting the reconstruction of basic infrastructure in Sichuan Province following the May 2008 earthquake. The project concerns basic infrastructure in affected areas (water, sanitation, waste treatment, roads…) and at the same time helps reduce the Province’s impact on climate change (particularly by increasing the use of domestic biogas) >> Find out more
