G20 Development: Solutions for a New World

    21/10/2011
The High Level Conference on development on the topic: “G20 Development: Solutions for a New World” was held on 21 October 2011 at the Ministerial Conference Center in Paris. Following the opening ceremony presided over by the French President, four workshops were organized during this day and focused on food security, with Pierre Jacquet, AFD’s Chief Economist as rapporteur, infrastructure investments, with the participation of Dov Zerah, AFD’s CEO, social protection for all, and innovative financing.

This High Level Conference had three objectives:

    • Mobilize civil society support for development,
    • Discuss the proposals made by the G20 Development held in Washington DC on 23 September 2011, and
    • Launch an open debate on the issues of cooperation between governments, international organizations, NGOs, businesses, high school and university students, professional organizations, politicians and parliamentarians, experts and intellectuals, journalists and bloggers.

The G20 is the main global forum for economic cooperation. It gathers 20 of the world’s largest economies, including emerging countries, such as Brazil, India, South Africa and China, as well as the members of the G8. Together, the G20 countries represent 2/3 of the world population and 80% of global GDP.

Development was added to the G20 agenda in Toronto in June 2010 and led to the definition of a common vision on development in Seoul in November 2010, as well as the adoption of a concrete action plan.

In 2011, the French presidency of the G20 elevated the topic of development to the political level, and made it a priority for the international economic agenda, by organizing the first G20 meeting on development between Ministers of Development and Ministers of Finance in Washington DC, on 23 September 2011.

Holding discussions on development between G20 member countries, i.e. between emerging countries and industrialized countries, is a way to give political impetus at the highest international level to initiatives that support development and economic growth in Southern countries.

The next G20 summit is to be held on 3 and 4 November in Cannes.
