AFD, within the framework of its commitments to
sustainable development and fighting climate change has two simplified tools to analyse greenhouse gas emissions from its development projects and the vulnerability of the latter to the effects of climate change. The aim is to allow managers of projects financed by AFD to analyse their carbon content and to enhance project content by integrating climate change.
The first tool (French version) allows development project processors to quantify the amount of emissions from projects during the investment and operating phases. The calculation can be made with a few basic datas for most projects (between 5 and 10) which are entered on a rolldown menu to simplify the task. This Excel spreadsheet is linked to a specific database and includes
a user manual (French version). The evaluation provides initial data on the amount of CO2 eq emissions from projects and thus makes it possible to analyse, where applicable, possibilities to reduce such emissions (by comparing emissions avoided by the project with a reference scenario as if there had been no project).
The second tool analyses project vulnerability and makes it possible to raise basic questions on how to improve project design by integrating elements relating to the evolution of the planet’s climate.
These tools were designed by
Jean-Marc Jancovici who simplified the ADEME carbon footprint so that an initial assessment of greenhouse gas emissions from projects could be made. The calculations are therefore less accurate than those obtained from the ADEME carbon footprint which can be consulted on the ADEME website. Dimitri Kanounnikoff and Denis Loyer contributed to the design of this tool.
AFD would like to develop these tools and make new versions available and therefore welcomes any observations and recommendations which should be made to Bertrand Loiseau (
loiseaub@afd.fr).
Finally, the use of datas provided by this software is under the sole responsibility of the user. AFD has taken all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the software and can under no circumstances be held responsible in case of damage to the user’s informatics system.
