Inauguration of the Gastroenterology Department of the Maputo Central Hospital (MCH)
September 28th, 2009

The new Gastroenterology Department of the Maputo Central Hospital (MCH) was inaugurated on September 28th, 2009, by His Excellency Prof. Paulo Ivo Garrido, Health Minister, in presence of Dr. Francisco Cândido, MCH Executive Director, His Excellency Christian Daziano, French Ambassador in Mozambique, and Bruno Leclerc, French Development Agency (AFD) Director in Maputo.

The department rehabilitation was co-financed by a € 500.000 AFD grant, equivalent to approximatively 17,5 millions of meticais. This grant financed also part of the furniture and specialised equipment of the new Department, as well as technicians-training courses. This on-going training program will contribute to enhance the Department effectiveness and reinforce its technicians' knowledge, in particular in terms of diagnostic and treatment, for patients' benefits.

This new Department, working under international standards, will provide better quality health care to patients, especially to those with very specific pathologies.

France, through the Service of cooperation and cultural action of the Embassy, has been supporting MCH for more than 20 years. Besides, this operation is part of the French cooperation strategy in support to the health sector in Mozambique, implemented specifically by AFD.
