The Millennium Development Goals

Helping African countries achieve the Millennium Development Goals

According to the United Nations report on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) published in 2007, one billion people still live on less than one dollar per day. Nearly half of them lives in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In order to meet the basic needs of the planet’s poorest countries, the international community pledged to increase aid with the Millennium Goals. The AFD dedicates more than 50% of its funding for Africa to achieving them (535 million euros).

Within this framework, the AFD has several priorities:

  • Programmes providing access to water and sanitation, urban development, and improving living conditions for shantytown inhabitants, as part of Goal #7 that seeks to fight the major pandemics.
  •   Projects for agriculture, fishing, and microcredit, as part of Goal #1 which is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
  • Operations in the areas of education and health as part of Goal #2, which is to achieve universal primary education for all, and Goals #4, 5 and 6 which aim to reduce mortality.
  • Vocational training and commercial capacity-building programmes as part of Goal #8 which seeks to bring about a global partnership for development.
