January 2nd, 2009

On the 2nd of January, 2009, AFD approved a € 1.5 M financing to support the development of the shrimp aquaculture sector in Mozambique. The project is part of the Trade capacity building Program (PRCC), a programme which is co-financed by the Treasury and Economic Policy Directorate General (DGTPE) of the French Ministry of Economy, Finances and Industry and implemented by the French Development Agency (AFD). It aims at building trade capacity in developing countries for them to be better integrated into world trade.

The main objective of the shrimp aquaculture sectordevelopment project is to improve the international competitiveness of this sector that might contribute significantly to the country's economic growth.

Based on an integrated approach of capacity building, the project will support both private actors (through the APCM, Mozambican Shrimp Producers Association) and public institutions – mostly the National Institute for Aquaculture Development, INAQUA, and the National Institute for Seafood products' Inspection, INIP.

The project will thus contribute to the reinforcement of the sector's organization, increasing the sector's production and exportation capacities, and allowing international standards requirements to be respected (particularly in terms of traceability and food security).

It will also focus on improving dialogue and cooperation between public institutions and private actors, which is an essential to the sector's development.
