24th of February 2009 - Seminar AFD/MICOA
"Natural ressources, environment and sustainable growth in Mozambique"

The Ministry for Coordination of Environmental Affairs (MICOA) and the AFD have organized on February 24th a one day seminar on “Natural resources, environment and sustainable growth in Mozambique” to present the results of the AFD-CERNA (Research center from Mines-ParisTech) study on the natural capital of Mozambique. Pierre Jacquet, AFD Chief Economist and Head of Strategy and Pierre-Noël Giraud from CERNA were present, as well as Kirk Hamilton from the Environment Department of the World Bank who broadened the concept of wealth of nations to the natural capital and the Mozambican economist Carlos Nuno Castel-Branco.

The seminar “Natural resources, environment and sustainable growth in Mozambique”, chaired by MICOA’s Secretary Permanent, has been the occasion to discuss with more than a hundred participants the methodology and the data used, the results of the study, as well as what should happen next. Pierre Jacquet presented the main conclusions at the end of the day.

The study shows in particular that natural capital represents 49% of the wealth of Mozambique, mainly being made up of mineral resources, forestry resources and agricultural land.

The study “Natural resources, environment and sustainable growth in Mozambique” and this seminar are part of the political dialogue between the Government of Mozambique and the development partners. The objective, in a context of rapid growth of the country and of implementation of mega projects particularly in the field of energy, is a better recognition of environmental issues in the coming strategies and policies.
