World wide release and distribution in Mozambique of the french movie HOME,
Directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

World Environment Day - June 5th, 2009

On June 5th, 2009, World Environment Day, the French movie HOME, directed by the well known photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, environmental activist, was released in Mozambique as well as in more than 100 countries and out of the five continents.

Through unique shootings of the Earth taken from the sky, this film shows the deep and worrying changes affecting our planet, mostly in terms of natural resources’ degradation and climate change. The worldwide free showing this film aimed to make citizens of all countries more aware of the growing global environmental stakes.

In Mozambique, the French Embassy, the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center (CCFM) linked up to organize a series of events around this release.

First projection took place on June 5th, World Environment Day, at the CCFM in Maputo, in presence of Mrs Ana Chichava, Vice-Minister for the Coordination of Environmental Affairs and Mr Christian Daziano, French Ambassador in Mozambique. While the French Ambassador reiterated France’s commitment toward environment preservation, the Mozambican Government, represented by the Vice-Minister, reaffirmed its will to better integrate environment into national policies and strategies.

More than 300 people attended the event, among which various representatives of the diplomatic body and of the Mozambican public institutions.

Mozambican televisions also got involved in the event. Indeed, TIM (Independent Television of Mozambique), one of the four main channels in the country, broadcasted HOME on Friday June 5th at 9:15 pm and on Sunday June 7th at 04h15 pm. RTP, lusophone TV channel, also retransmitted the documentary on Sunday June 7th in the evening.

At the same time, on June 5th, in the district of Vilankulos, which is located at nearly 700 km from Maputo, around 500 people coming from all neighbouring areas, attended a free screening of the movie. This event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, non governmental organization that is very committed in the environment sector in the country), in partnership with local authorities.

The days following the release, several screenings were held for Maputo’s schools, such as Josina Machel (nearly 150 pupils), Francisco Manyanga (a class of 30 pupils), 1° de Maio (a class of 30 pupils), the French school (nearly 200 pupils) and the Portuguese school (around 1500 pupils). The objective was to raise children’s awareness, showing them that small or large scale’s actions can both have impact. And that we can get involved through local initiatives, such as campaigns against deforestation, education and environmental awareness programs biodiversity protection projects, etc.

In Mozambique, which is one of the most vulnerable countries to the consequences of climate change and environmental degradation, these events gave an unique opportunity for collective thinking on world environmental challenges.
