Training seminar on environmental economics
July, 16th and 17th 2009 – VIP Hotel, Maputo
 

The French Development Agency (AFD) and Eduardo Mondlane University's (UEM) Centre of Economics and Management Studies (CEEG) co-organized last July, 16th and 17th, in Maputo, a training seminar on environmental economics.  

The seminar aimed at providing Mozambican economists and specialists' with technical knowledge on environmental economics, in particular on the innovative concept of "genuine saving", nowadays internationally considered as one of the main tool to assess one's country wealth and economic growth's sustainability.
 
The training session was based on the methodology and results of the "Natural resources, environment and sustainable growth in Mozambique" study undertaken by AFD in close cooperation with the Mozambican Ministry for Coordination of Environmental Affairs (MICOA) and the "Ecole des Mines" of Paris. Following the study's main results' results in a seminar held in Maputo on February, 24th, AFD was asked to provide technical capacity building on the study's methodology.
 
This 1.5-day training seminar gathered more than 50 representatives from various institutions: economics and social sciences' professors, agronomy's teachers, specialists and economists from line sectoral ministries (environment, planning, finance, agriculture, health, energy, fishery) as well as representatives from civil society and the private sector. The seminar was chaired by M. Vasco Nhabinde, CEEG Director, Dominique Rojat, senior environmental economist at AFD's HQ, and Timothée Ollivier, researcher from the "Ecole des Mines" of Paris who did the study. Among the participants was also a researcher from the South-Africa-based CEEPA (Center for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa), world widely known for its knowledge on environmental economics. 
 
Further to the provided technical training on the study's methodology, these two days gave an opportunity for Mozambican specialists to further discuss the issue of natural resources' management and economic growth's sustainability in Mozambique.
