Urgency in Haiti

HAITI.JPGIn the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, the international community is energetically mobilizing. France has provided €20M of emergency aid, including €10M to the UN, and has announced the cancellation of €54M of its bilateral debt. An ambassador, Pierre Duquesne, has also been appointed to prepare the upcoming international donors’ conference. AFD is working in close partnership with the departments of the French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

AFD’s agency in Port-au-Prince was partially destroyed, but its entire staff is safe and sound. AFD is energetically mobilizing to support its Haitian staff that has remained on the spot.

AFD has been active in Haiti since 1976 and implements a number of projects in the water, sanitation, agriculture, education and health sectors. It is working to prepare the reconstruction of Haiti alongside other international donors.

AFD is heavily involved in the preparation of the reconstruction phase alongside other international donors. A mission will take place during the week of 25 January in order to assess the needs. AFD will be working in coordination with its partners, particularly NGOs, local authorities, foundations and companies. It should also be financing projects in the water, sanitation and health sectors.
