Sustanaible Development

At the Rio Earth summit of 1992, the international community pledged to develop a global partnership for sustainable development.  The resulting idea was to meet present needs without compromising the resources that would be needed by future generations.  The challenge is to reconcile economic, social and environmental priorities.

The issue of sustainable development is at the heart of the AFD’s activities, which seek to simultaneously achieve three goals:  promoting economic growth, reducing poverty and social inequality and protecting the environment.  The AFD is also committed to promoting a policy of social and environmental responsibility, both through its own operations and through those that it finances.

Since its Global Compact membership AFD has devoted efforts to identify and scale up its contribution to meeting the goals and values of these texts, both in its functioning and operational practices.

This process has led AFD to

  • define a strategic programming method based on both the relevant stakes and the measurement of sustainable development outcomes
  • overhaul assessment and management procedures for environmental and social risks related to its funding
  • develop a transparency policy with the aim of increasing access to information on its functioning, mission, operations and intellectual production
  • analyse its environmental practices with a view to mitigating the ecological impact of its activity.
