AFD's environmental and social commitments

AFD formally committed on the ten following points for 2007-2011:

  1. To design all AFD strategic documents with a programming approach based on the relevant stakes and the outcomes of equitable and sustainable development;
  2. To progressively carry out systematic environmental and social monitoring for all AFD operations, from processing to ex post evaluation, with priority being given to operations ranked “high risk”[3]  in these areas;
  3. To reduce total water and electricity consumption and reduce paper consumption by 10 %;
  4. To become “carbon neutral” by 2008 at the latest vis-à-vis GHG emissions for all its activity by working simultaneously to reduce emissions and compensate by purchasing emission reduction certificates;
  5. To constantly improve coherence and transparency in its support for career development and professional mobility for AFD staff;
  6. To pursue diversity efforts through a recruitment process to reflect a broad cultural, social and geographical diversity and the disabled. In terms of the latter, AFD also commits to supporting job-creating initiatives;
  7. To continue to promote equity within the Institution with two main priorities: to increase the number of female staff in management positions and improve working conditions, training and representation of local staff;
  8. To publish all information relevant to financed operations at the various stages of the operational cycle (processing, commitment, implementation, evaluation) in compliance with legal obligations relating to confidentiality and progressively increase public information about its functioning and strategy;
  9. To strengthen its capacity in the areas of social and environmental responsibility, particularly through in-service training programmes on the problematics of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility;
  10. To publish an annual progress report relating to all the commitments set out in this document. This report will complement SER information in the AFD annual reference document required by the NRE law.
