Mauritius and La Reunion, Neighbours in the Indian Ocean: Sustainable development in small islands - Experience and flagship cooperation programme
As tropical islands, Mauritius and La Reunion both face specific sustainable development challenges. To address these, the islands have both launched projects towards sustainable development, the “GERRI” project in La Reunion and the “Sustainable Mauritius” project.
The AFD will be organising a high-level seminar at the Rio+ 20 conference with the players involved in the two processes, in order to compare and discuss them with the public.
The seminar is being held as a venue for high-level discussions drawing on the practical experiences of the two islands - on their own territory but also with cooperation programmes – in order to identify practical opportunities, draw lessons from the constraints and difficulties encountered during the processes and outline ideas for the future of these islands and similar territories.
