European Parliament
Informing European parliamentarians
AFD has a number of long-established relations with French national parliamentarians and six of their representatives hold a seat on its Board of Directors. Today, it closely follows the activities of the European Parliament and is giving increasing importance to building a partnership with European Members of Parliament.
The European Parliament has a role, particularly in the framework of the work of its Development Commission, that leads it to address issues relating to AFD’s activity where AFD enjoys an expertise which may be useful to parliamentarians. The Parliament consequently has a key role to play in orienting European development cooperation policy.
Moreover, in France, Euro MPs are in contact with key partners for AFD, particularly the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, and with civil society working in the sphere of development assistance. Their constituent local authorities are often involved in decentralized cooperation actions, sometimes in partnership with AFD. Finally, their missions often lead them to visit AFD’s partner countries.
