Objective

The project aims at protecting wild fauna biodiversity, increasing economic benefits from sport hunting and guarantying access for communities to resources generated by fauna exploitation.
 
 

Project content

The project will strengthen the capacities of the Department for Flora and Wild Fauna and Community Participation within the National Directorate for Conservation Areas (DNAC) of the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) relating to sustainable management of Mozambique’s wild fauna.
 

The three years technical assistance provided to the MITUR will deal with:

  • promoting fauna exploitation systems that ensure community participation in fauna management and reconcile its economic and social interests with those of the private actors interested in sport hunting development,
  • designing rules for public and private hunting areas to ensure sustainable management of resources and biodiversity,
  • strengthening the DNAC institutional framework regarding wild fauna biodiversity protection and develop its capacities and its monitoring-evaluation system.
 
The project responsibility is held by the Ministry of Tourism represented by the National Directorate for Conservation Areas (DNAC).

Expected outcomes

Project impacts will be:

  • a more rational management of Mozambique wild fauna resources conciliating tourism development and biodiversity protection while respecting local communities interests,
  • an increase in State revenues from the development of sport hunting,
  • greater economic benefits for the population.
