Objective

The project aims at improving and making sustainable access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene practices for families (a total of 75.000 people) in three rural districts of Nampula Province.

Project Content

The project breaks down into five activities:

  • support to 249 communities for the creation of water and sanitary infrastructure: creation of 249 protected water points and 7.200 ecological latrines, with village participation,
  • management and technical capacity building for village committees,
  • implementation of basic services for water point maintenance in the districts, which includes local capacity building for pump maintenance and repairs, as well as the autonomization of spare part distribution,
  • improvement of families’ practical knowledge on hygiene and sanitation,
  • support to the Provincial Delegation for Public Works and Housing (DPOPH) in its decentralization process.

The proposed approach integrates the specific constraints and needs of the populations targeted and the ones linked to the context:

  • capacity building for local stakeholders: local NGO, DPOPH and village structures,
  • training on hygiene and sanitation for the final beneficiaries with an adapted participative approach,
  • support to communities which implement sanitary and water infrastructure,
  • implementation of maintenance services financed by users.

The project is fully in line with the water sector policy.

Several partners are participating in project implementation:

  • Inter Aide NGO, leader of the Inter Aide / Essor group, which has been carrying out a similar experiment in Malawi for 10 years. Inter Aide is in charge of implementation and institutional, administrative and financial supervision of the project,
  • Essor NGO, an operational partner which specifically works on community empowerment projects with strong experience of local partners in Mozambique,
  • Provincial Delegation for Public Works and Housing (DPOPH), an institutional partner in charge of implementing the National Water Policy, coordination and supervision of the various stakeholders in the sector.
