Objective

The project's overall objective is to develop sustainable urban and periurban agriculture in Maputo city and its surroundings (specifically Matola), through the increase of capacities of the producers, their associations and supporting institutions.
 
More specifically, the aim of the project is:
  • to contribute to Mozambique social stability and food security through the increase of local food production,
  • to contribute  to the environment protection and public health through a sustainable agriculture production,
  • to increase competencies and intervention capacities of public and private stakeholders of agriculture sector.
 

Activities and expected outcomes

 
Outcome 1: Producers' associations have strengthened their capacities; they propose adequate services to their members and represent them efficiently with public institutions.
 
To reach this outcome, the following activities are planned:
  • strengthening of existing producers' associations (management, governance),
  • support to network operations and creation of Unions of associations at a district level.
 
Outcome 2: Supporting services to urban and periurban agriculture respond efficiently to the producers' needs.
 
To reach this outcome, the following activities are planned:
  • diagnostic on current training and extension plan and definition of a training program for extension agents,
  • continuing education of technical staff from support institutions.
 
 
Outcome 3: 1.000 farmers and 50 young improve their production and revenues while reducing negative impact on environment.
 
To reach this outcome, the following activities are planned:
  • farmers training and participative experimentation of conservation agriculture practices : crop diversification, organic fertilisation, pest and blight control,
  • support productive projects led by farmers and their associations: improvement of irrigation systems, better access to seeds and instruments, commercialisation organisation,
  • integration and training of young people in agriculture activity.
 
 
Outcome 4: Public and private institutions interact and elaborate joint strategies to support urban and periurban agriculture.
 
To reach this outcome, it is planned the creation and implementation of a forum on public policies to support urban and periurban agriculture.
 
 

Financing plan

 
The project is financed by the French Development Agency in collaboration with the European Union and other private funds.
 
The contracting entity responsible for the project is the NGO ESSOR.
