Areas of operation

AFD’s areas of operation in China

Strategically, the AFD focuses its operations on the issues of climate change, an area of common interest for both France and China. Projects that contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gasses (CO2, natural gas….) are therefore sought out in priority. Regardless of the chosen economic sector, any project that leads to a major reduction in CO2 emissions can be eligible for AFD financing.

AFD areas of operation in China are the following:

  • The production of efficient or renewable electricity: the AFD funds projects that promote the use of low carbon intensive energy (for example gas cogeneration), renewable energies (solar, wind and geothermal energy, small hydropower energy) or carbon sequestration or sinks.

  • Sustainable urban development: the AFD supports projects that reduce the demand for road transport, projects that improve urban transport systems (urban planning, clean or low carbon emitting transport systems) as well as projects that improve construction norms, urban heating and cooling requirements (improvement in construction norms, optimisation of residential energy consumptions), but also projects that improve the management of urban waste especially those that support the use of gas from waste to produce electricity.

  • Low-carbon rural development: the AFD is participating in projects concerning reforestation, biological carbon sequestration, conservation agriculture as well as projects that support the production of biogas from waste and residues.

Energy efficiency in the industrial and services sectors: the AFD supports programmes that improve existing systems, energy efficiency norms.
