PROPARCO, a branch with private sector specialisation

With 66.8 percent of shares held by the AFD, the Société de promotion et de participation pour la coopération économique (PROPARCO) specialises in private sector support. Established in 1977, it has a capital of 142.56 million euros. Its role is to stimulate investments and markets by granting bank aid that is financially profitable and conducive to development. PROPARCO is empowered to offer assistance in the form of long-term loans, own-source funds and equity participation in enterprises, as well as guarantees or financial engineering. The following summarises its goals for economic development:

The FFEM—for protection of the global environment

How can the world’s great ecological issues be addressed while promoting development?

This complex issue is the focus of the Fonds Français pour l’environnement mondial (French Global Environment Facility - FFEM), established in 1994 by the government of France and managed by the AFD. While endeavouring to mobilise international players around major environmental challenges (climate change, biodiversity protection, control of desertification and deforestation, protection of the ozone layer), the FFEM is funding projects in response to requests from various ministries and the AFD.
