Access to healthcare and health education for women and children
Context
Mozambique’s growth rates have brought down poverty in recent years yet access to health services remains insufficient and unequal and only half the population has access to health centers. Infant mortality stands at 154 per 1 000 and 68% of women are illiterate (compared with 37% of men). Cabo Delgado region is located in northern Mozambique. Most of its infrastructure was destroyed during the civil war. Agence Française de Développement (AFD) finances the Ministry of Health within the framework of sectoral aid and has launched a joint support program for the health and education sectors.
Objective
AFD’s financing aims to improve the health status of the population of Cabo Delgado province via a series of coordinated actions in health and education services.
Project description
AFD is supporting two of the program’s components:
To improve the province’s health services
- institutional support to the health department;
- improving access to basic health services (construction of 6 new health centers) and improving quality (health staff training and greater supervision);
- strengthening reference hospitals (rehabilitation and equipment of the provincial hospital and a district hospital);
- strengthening the implementation of priority programs (AIDS, malaria…) and maternal and infant health programs.
Health literacy
The program supports national adult literacy programs by implementing health education modules.
Place of women and impacts
The program specifically focuses on combating maternal mortality.
By 2009 the rate of assisted childbirths in the province should have risen to 50% (compared with 34% in 2004). The maternal mortality rate should fall to 200 per 100 000 live births (compared with 301 in 2004).
Thanks to this program 68 literacy trainers will be trained in health modules and health coverage will rise from 61 to 70%. 100% of babies under a year old are now vaccinated against measles (compared with 91% in 2004).
