Afrique Contemporaine

Africa’s media industry is largely unknown, yet it is experiencing rapid growth. In just two decades, it has moved from a shortage and monopoly to an impressive profusion of newspapers and radio and television stations, which compete for both domestic and international markets and offer pluralist and diverse information. Radio and television stations, newspapers and websites have now become major players in the daily lives of Africans and in economic, social and political development in Africa.

Afrique contemporaine, in collaboration with Marie-Soleil Frère and Sylvie Capitant, gathers several major research papers on media systems in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The authors use an interdisciplinary approach to describe practices from an internal perspective. The aim is to understand the changes that have come about through the development of information and communications technologies, as well as the links with the business community and circles of power.
