A few months away from the Fifth World Water Forum to be held in Istanbul in 2009, the Chirac Foundation, UNESCO and Agence Française de Développement are organizing a conference:


  
  “Water for Peace, Peace for Water”
 
Thursday 13 November 2008 in Paris


 
The conference will take place in the presence of Jacques Chirac, Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, and Jean-Michel Severino, Chief Executive Officer of Agence Française de Développement.
 

Two roundtables will address the thematics of cross-border waters and access to water in fragile States:

- Professor Lidia Brito, former Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Mozambique
- Michel Camdessus, former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund
- Noah Kinarti, member of the Israeli delegation for negotiations with the Palestinians on water issues
- Salem Ould Merzoug, High Commissioner of the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River
- Sunita Narain, Director of the Centre for Science and Environment, India

Access to water in fragile States can become a crucial issue at local, national and international levels. The aim is to examine solutions (financing mechanisms and intervention methods) that will resolve problems of access to water without worsening factors of fragility in these crisis States.
