The boom in Chinese investments in Africa comes with concerns over their ecological impacts in host countries.
A predominant view is that the low level of environmental and social requirements gives Chinese companies a comparative advantage to access Africa’s natural resources over their Western competitors, who benefit from their long-standing establishment and their advanced technologies. However, the principles and implementation of environmental management by Chinese companies remain largely unknown.
