Uzbekistan: MIIT and AFD Review their Collaboration at Annual Consultations

A first phase of technical meetings, from 25 to 27 January, brought together the technical contributors in AFD projects in Uzbekistan to assess their progress. The 9 ongoing projects, for a total of 814 million euros committed since 2015, promote the development of solid waste management, sustainable livestock farming, energy, green finance and sanitation, among others. The aim is to support the Uzbek government in facing the challenge of a sustainable growth, benefiting its entire population, while limiting its effect on the climate. At the end of these technical meetings, a roadmap for the concrete follow-up of these projects in 2023 was jointly issued by the counterparts.

The annual consultations, a political dialogue between institutional representatives of AFD and the government of Uzbekistan, were later held in a hybrid format bringing together participants from Tashkent and Paris. Following President Mirziyoyev's visit to Paris in November 2022 and his meeting with AFD's Chief Executive Officer, these fourth annual consultations reaffirmed the will to deepen cooperation between AFD and the Government of Uzbekistan. The two institutions confirmed their commitment to cooperation with joint projects in the fields of energy, green economy, urban development, access to water and sustainable finance.

In Tashkent, Mr Tashabaev, Deputy Minister of Investments, Industry and Trade, Ms Aurelia Bouchez, French Ambassador to Uzbekistan, and Cécile Couprie, AFD Regional Director for Eurasia, participated in the discussions.

During Ms Couprie's visit to Uzbekistan, a technical assistance grant agreement was signed with SQB bank. The Regional Director will continue her mission in Karakalpakstan where she will meet with AFD's local counterparts and visit rehabilitation sites of degraded lands around the Aral Sea.
