Shared Innovation: Searching for Innovative Development Solutions - Call for proposals

The call for proposals

The purpose of this call for proposals is to identify innovative sustainable development solutions with a potential for replication and/or scaling up. The selected innovations will be registered in the database of our new Shared Innovation initiative. They will gain visibility and may be promoted during events, and be the subject of meetings and exchanges between peers and/or with sectoral experts from the AFD Group.

Who is this call for?

This call for contributions is open to all local actors in the innovation and/or sustainable development sectors in North Africa, more precisely in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya or Egypt.

We encourage the participation of public administrations and operators, incubators/accelerators, startups, SMEs, civil society actors, entrepreneurs, development agencies, international/regional organizations, as well as any other actors involved in the search for innovative solutions for sustainable development.

Which sectors of intervention are concerned?

All AFD Group's sectors of intervention are covered by this call for proposals . The proposed projects must directly or indirectly aim to improve gender equality in the region.

What does my innovation gain from being selected?

The selected innovation will be included in the Shared Innovation database, one of the main pillars of this AFD initiative. In the long term, this will allow us to promote the innovation’s visibility through diverse activities. We also aim to connect similar innovations from different geographies or actors.

Among the selected proposals, 3 “Shared Innovation golden nuggets” will be chosen and invited to pitch during the second edition of the “Printemps de l'Innovation” (Innovation Spring week), an internal event organized by AFD from May 31st to June 2nd, 2023. This annual event aims to highlight innovative projects, actors and approaches. The participation modalities will be defined later (hybrid or face-to-face format) and directly with the selected participants.

Methodological guide

What is the Shared Innovation initiative?

Given the complexity of today's challenges and the need to support social and environmental transitions, the AFD Group is positioning innovation as a lever to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Shared Innovation initiative seeks to support this ambition by positioning itself as a vehicle for sharing and promoting innovative solutions for sustainable development in order to strengthen their replication. The initiative aims to share experiences and knowledge and to create links and dialogue between different ecosystems.

What is a development innovation?

Innovation can be found in all of AFD Group’s sectors of intervention. Because innovation is a particularly complex concept to define, rather than providing a precise definition the Shared Innovation team has chosen a common vision for this concept.

Conceptual or contextual, innovation may be an approach, a process, a product or a service providing one or more inspiring and alternative solutions to development challenges. Innovation for development contributes to one or more transformational changes in practices and ways of thinking, and has a positive impact on populations, territories and the environment.

What is a first positive feedback?

The first positive feedback can be given in a formal way, for instance through a result-oriented evaluation, or in an informal way, through the statement of a project officer or project director.

What is a transformational change in practices and ways of thinking?

An innovation for sustainable development may bring changes in the beneficiaries' lifestyles; changes that they accept and commit to - helping to make the innovation sustainable. Innovations can lead to a transformation of their interactions with their environment - being political, social, economic, cultural, institutional, or natural - and cause a shift in their attitudes or ways of actions.
