In Bamako and in the main cities of the country, the water service is managed by two public operators, Somapep (management) and Somagep (infrastructure). The insufficient production is accompanied by population growth of more than 5% per year in the agglomeration, which has almost 2.3 million inhabitants. On the right bank of the Niger river, the increase is even 9% per year. The connection to drinking water covers 50% of the population. The target set by Mali as part of the Millennium Development Goals was to reach 82% in 2015.
