With 1.9 billion inhabitants – almost a quarter of the global population – South Asia is the world’s most populous region. Over the past few decades, South Asian countries have experienced rapid growth, enabling 320 million people to rise out of extreme poverty between 1990 and 2015.
As defined in its global strategy for 2018-2022, AFD Group funds, supports and accelerates the transition towards a fairer and more sustainable world. To this end, AFD prioritizes projects that are 100% compliant with the Paris Agreement as well as those that build social cohesion. Climate is at the core of AFD’s strategy in South Asia where our projects are expected to offer no less than 70% climate co-benefits.
AFD’s ongoing portfolio in South Asia is focuses on sustainable urban development, clean energy, access to clean water and sanitation, and protecting biodiversity, in order to meet three main challenges:
- Mitigating climate change by encouraging low-carbon transitions
- Enhancing territorial resilience and supporting sustainable management of resources
- Fostering the reduction of inequalities and building more inclusive societies
