Since 2012, AFD has been working with the State of Assam on biodiversity conservation, sustainable and participatory management of forests, creation of alternate livelihoods for forest-dependent communities and strengthening Assam's Forest Department.

By 2024, under the Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation (APFBC), 33,500 hectares of land will have been reforested and over 10,000 members of the community will have been trained in local trades in order to revive the local economy, and protect forest resources.
