Because of increased migration flows, mainly due to the Syrian conflict, Turkey hosts the largest refugee population in the world, almost 4 million people, of whom about 3.6 million are Syrians.
The EU Facility for refugees in Turkey (FRIT) aims to help Turkey meet the immediate humanitarian and development needs of refugees and their host communities. Within this framework, the European Union has entrusted AFD with the implementation of the Municipal Services Project, which aims at strengthening water, sanitation and solid waste systems in eight provinces in southern Turkey, through investments in 19 infrastructures, and a technical assistance programme. The total budget of 266 million EUR consists of an EU grant and an AFD loan, and is availed to beneficiary ILBANK, the bank of Turkey’s municipalities. The project will be completed in 2025 and will also have an important climate impact.
