The series A Question of Development resents summaries and findings from studies, evaluations, and research initiatives launched or supported by AFD. Each one outlines a specific question or development challenge, the research approach taken, the main results, and key takeaways.
This series is intended for the development community: AFD’s partners, development practitioners, media professionals, teachers, researchers, students, civil society organizations, and more.

The ExPost series presents the findings of evaluations conducted by consultants and field experts. These evaluations aim to assess the relevance and analyze the impact of development projects and programs funded by AFD within its areas of intervention.
The ExPost series is part of a learning-sharing approach based on evaluation insights, as well as the accountability imperative of France’s public policy on solidarity-based and sustainable investment.

The MacroDev series is a key reference source for macroeconomic analysis and country risk, particularly in countries of the Global South.
These publications showcase analyses conducted by AFD researchers and economists, focusing on a specific country, region, or macroeconomic development-related issues. They are intended for students and academics, country risk specialists (investment banks), economic and political decision-makers, and investors.

The Research Papers series aims to disseminate ongoing work by researchers from AFD and the academic community.
These papers help raise awareness of current research and integrate it into the international development science community. They contribute to the global academic debate on development topics, covering a wide range of economic and development themes, often aligned with AFD’s priority research areas.

Policy Briefs are concise documents designed to promote dialogue, debate, and exchange of viewpoints on development topics. They formulate public policy recommendations and raise awareness among a non-academic audience—particularly policymakers—on key issues important to AFD. The aim is to fuel the debate on a specific development question.

Policy Papers offer public policy recommendations by presenting a clear argument and adopting a “problem/solution” approach. This method is applied to an analysis focused on a territory and/or a development theme.
Policy Papers raise awareness among a non-academic audience about key issues for AFD. They help promote public debate and support decision-making. Their main audience includes policymakers, public institutions, and subject matter experts.

Public Policy Dialogues encourage dialogue and debate on development issues. They provide recommendations for the design and implementation of public policies and are exclusively part of large partnership programs.

Technical Reports share technical, geographical, and sector-specific information on aspects of development and provide practical feedback.
They highlight reports, feasibility studies, case analyses, and field surveys produced by AFD, which contain valuable information, especially for development practitioners.

Our special editions
Special edition publications feature research work initiated and/or led by AFD. Their themes correspond to fundamental and strategic priorities of AFD’s activities.
Co-editions
AFD engages in co-publishing projects with donors and publishers, both through occasional editorial partnerships and through two ongoing series:
Created in 2009, the Africa Development Forum series focuses on major social and economic development issues in Africa, promoting multi-country approaches.
Each issue provides a comprehensive overview of a specific topic and contributes to informing the development of local, regional, and global policies.
This bilingual (French-English) series is co-directed by AFD and the World Bank. Selected manuscripts arise from multidisciplinary research and field activities conducted by both institutions.

Every year, AFD offers original analyses on major economic and social issues affecting the African continent in the Repères series published by La Découverte. This synthesis presents key macroeconomic trends for Africa and its regions. The publication takes a multidisciplinary perspective on major structural challenges, whether continental or country-specific.

Open access policy for publications
For several years, AFD has committed to open access and makes publications from the AFD Editions available to the public, free to consult and download on the AFD website.

Sharing freely accessible knowledge online is the most effective way to ensure broad and usable dissemination of research outcomes and to encourage readership. Open access enables authors to maximize the reach of their results and allows readers to access a larger volume of relevant information.
