Preventing the exclusion of young people in the Diffa region
This project, which has the Sahel Alliance label, is being implemented for young people in Diffa, a remote region badly affected by the security crisis. To combat the feeling of exclusion among young people and improve their prospects, the project will promote social cohesion, income creation and socio-professional integration.
Context

In the Diffa region, located near Lake Chad and the Nigerian border, the security situation is precarious and the emergency measures taken by the authorities impose restrictions which are strangling economic activities in the region, particularly agricultural activities.

It is estimated that there are 300,000 displaced people in the area (i.e. a third of the local population). 30% of the population is aged between 15 and 35, i.e. 170,000 young people who are suffering from this alarming security and economic context: the frustration related to the lack of economic opportunities is palpable, which undermines the State’s legitimacy to take action.

Description

The project aims to combat the feeling of exclusion among young people and contribute to improving their living conditions and life chances.
Objectives: promote dynamics for the social and economic integration of young people in their community through short and medium-term actions:

  • Activities with a rapid economic impact to create jobs and incomes;
  • Socio-educational, cultural and sports activities for personal and collective fulfilment;
  • Systems for training, mediation and to support integration and employment tailored to the local context.

The project also aims to build the management capacities of national and regional institutions in order to strengthen the legitimacy of the State, the coordination of actors and the economic and social development of the region.

Impacts
  • Stronger social cohesion and job and income creation for some 10,500 young people
  • Support for vocational training for some 1,500 young people and vocational integration for some 500 young people
  • Improvement in living conditions and life chances for young people and alleviation of the feeling of exclusion
