Winners of AFD’s Digital Challenge: 2021 Edition

After five years of existence, 35 African start-ups have benefited from financial support and coaching to help them scale up.

A Smart App for Sustainable Fishing in Mexico

The Mexican NGO Cobi and local fishers have developed a new smart phone app that enables fishers to track and monitor animal populations, including birds, sea mammals, fish, and crustaceans. This innovation, supported by the French Facility for Global Environment  and AFD will be featured at the One Ocean Summit, the international summit devoted to ocean conservation, to be held in Brest, France, on February 9–11.

With the onset of the global Covid pandemic, scientists and researchers set out to find solutions to the health crisis not only in the West, but across Africa as well. Experts examined human behavior in reaction to the rapidly spreading pandemic, and to mark the WHO’s two-year long fight against the pandemic, we examine the innovative projects developed by the winners of the Data4Covid19 challenge. The aim: to combat Covid-19 in Africa by facilitating the production of information using open data.

Poaching poses a major threat to the survival of numerous species – many of which are endangered. How to tackle it? In Libreville, the National Agency for the Preservation of Nature has just set up a wildlife genetic analysis laboratory financed by AFD and the World Bank. By analyzing DNA samples, it is now possible to trace and identify those involved – and prosecute offenders.

Imaginative modes of transport are being harnessed to transport vital medicines, blood tests and supplies in Rwanda, in a partnership that will facilitate care for the ill and the vulnerable. Californian start-up Zipline makes the deliveries by drone – the kind of operation that was once the stuff of science-fiction. As the coronavirus spreads, the delivery system allows medical staff across the country to transport and process blood tests quickly, and thereby keep a close eye on who may be at risk.

Anti-Malaria Ointment Offers Protection from Deadly Disease

Even before the coronavirus pandemic reached the continent, Africa has long had to deal with another potentially deadly disease. Malaria affects and kills more people in Africa than anywhere else in the world. The latest attempt to rein in the disease is bearing fruit. Two young entrepreneurs in Burkina Faso have developed a low-cost ointment, which contains both moisturizing and mosquito-repellent properties.

The product – currently awaiting WHO approval – is an example of how sometimes “low-tech” scientific innovations can save lives.
