Macro-economic analyses

As a public development bank, AFD has a duty to weigh the issues and to monitor the risks associated with each of its investments. That’s why we have a team dedicated to analyzing the macro-economic and financial situation of the countries in which we operate.
Country assessments
Country assessments aid in analyzing the development processes of the countries in which AFD operates. They characterize each country’s growth trajectory and identify the associated economic, social, political, and financial vulnerabilities. These analyses are designed to inform AFD’s operational and strategic decision-making in its countries of operation.
Our country assessments focus on six key themes:
- Context, which examines the political, socio-economic, demographic, historical, and geographical dimensions that may affect economic stability;
- Long-term growth trajectory, taking into account both structural drivers and cyclical factors;
- Public finance and debt sustainability;
- External balances, through the analysis of external financing needs and how they are covered;
- Strength of the financial and banking sector;
- The economy’s exposure to physical and transition risks linked to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Cross-cutting analyses
Cross-cutting analyses in development macroeconomics address macroeconomic issues related to the development process and are relevant for shaping AFD’s intervention strategies.
These cross-cutting analyses are published in AFD's MacroDev collection.
In particular, the special “Semestrial Panorama” issues of MacroDev provide insights into key cyclical and structural challenges facing emerging and developing countries.
Our latest Semestrial Panorama
Each MacroDev Semestrial Panorama is accompanied by a DecoDev webinar. Join our economists for an in-depth session decoding major macroeconomic trends, followed by three country-specific spotlights.
The African Economy (by La Découverte)
A special focus is placed on Africa. Each year, original analyses on the continent’s main economic and social challenges are published in The African Economy, part of the Repères collection, co-published with La Découverte.
What are Africa’s macroeconomic prospects in light of the ongoing financing shortage? What development and stability challenges does the continent face in the era of emerging artificial intelligence?
The African Economy 2025 offers a comprehensive reflection on the importance of a continental approach. It highlights the “All-Africa” perspective promoted by the AFD Group—an approach that moves beyond a dualistic view of the continent to embrace its broader unity.
