Africa’s Great Green Wall: a COP16 Priority against Desertification

To mark the opening of COP16 in Riyadh by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, we look at the Great Green Wall (GGW), the flagship initiative by the African Union and supported by AFD. Led by eleven countries, this initiative aims to regreen 100 million hectares of land and improve living conditions in the Sahel by 2030. Sandra Rullière, Deputy Head of the Agriculture, Rural Development and Biodiversity Division at AFD, discusses the challenges and future for this key project.

Improving Access to Water and Sanitation for millions in Ethiopia

World Toilet Day on November 19 highlights the dangers of lacking sanitary facilities, and the search for sustainable solutions. With an estimated 419 million people practising "open defecation" worldwide, the need for access to clean, safe toilets for all is more urgent than ever. Which is why AFD is funding a number of initiatives, including two flagship projects in Ethiopia. One will provide 2.6 million people with improved, gender-sensitive sanitation facilities and the second will improve access to water for 1 million people in 45 towns.

Ethiopia: Planting Seeds for Food Security after two years of War

Soil is the stuff of life – and it’s one of the first things to be affected by armed conflict. So Ethiopia’s first priority following the two-year Tigray war that ended last November is to ready the fields and resume farming. After the signing of an AFD and EU-backed project, the first seeds are being distributed again in the country’s Tigray and Amhara regions.
