AFD is supporting the action of the association Leading Youth, Sport & Development (LYSD) in Togo to increase the number of sports and educational activities available to young people and thereby support their personal development.
Context
In Togo, 41% of the population is under 15. There are few extra-curricular activities and education is inadequate, resulting in many difficulties in terms of integration into the labor market and the development of self-esteem.
The project called Milédou (“We are together” in Mina, a Togolese dialect) aims to set up a network of qualified educators to assist young people with their personal development in Togo. Through sports and games based on basketball, these mentors raise awareness among the new generation on a number of difficulties and taboos, such as gender equality, migration, and human trafficking.
The project aims to:
- support and provide tools to educators in the communities;
- raise awareness among young people on well-being and support their development;
- provide access to sports activities and cultural content;
- promote dialogue within and between communities;
- contribute to the emergence of talent (academic, entrepreneurship, sport).
Description
- Organization of basketball training twice a week and weekly dance sessions;
- Organization of sports leagues and meetings between young people from different communities;
- Development of a shared culture through events and the creation of content;
- Training of local educators by experts (in sport, education, psychology, digital technology, for example).
Impacts
- 700 young people aged between 8 and 20 have benefited from the program (at least 40% girls aged between 8 and 19);
- A network of 30 young mentors called “Milés” (16 girls and 14 boys aged between 17 and 25);
- 2,000 primary and secondary school students from the project intervention areas (at least 50% girls aged between 8 and 19).
