In Kenya, women are building roads to their empowerment
Published on
In Kenya's arid and semi-arid regions (ASAL), the development of road infrastructure is a key driver of connectivity, safety and access to services. In Maralal, the supported project favours labour-intensive construction methods in order to maximise local employment and income benefits, while improving access to schools, markets and health facilities.
Beyond the benefits of mobility, the initiative promotes the inclusion of women in a traditionally male-dominated sector by offering them training and professional opportunities in public works. The testimonials collected illustrate these impacts: acquisition of technical skills, economic empowerment and increased self-confidence.
By combining infrastructure improvement with socio-economic inclusion, these roads contribute to more sustainable and inclusive growth that benefits local communities.
