Under the MoU, GGGI and AFD aim to expand cooperation to new areas that are critical enablers to support green growth and the mobilization of private finance to support climate action, including financial innovation to support the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement and carbon market such as readiness for Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
The agreement will also enhance cooperation in key areas such as sustainable waste management, mobility, energy, coastal resilience and the blue economy. Additionally, the partnership will support creation of green jobs and skills, and advancement of climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable forestry, and eco/agrotourism.
“ The partnership between GGGI and AFD has allowed both our institutions to join forces in support of partner countries and financial systems in their pathway to a more sustainable development,” stated Mrs. Marie-Hélène Loison, Deputy Chief Executive Office of AFD ”To name a few achievements, we have supported together the climate policy dialogues in Ethiopia, in Vanuatu, in Philippines or in Mexico, either through the elaboration of long term low carbon and resilient development pathways or with a sectoral focus such as financial systems or waste sector. These policy dialogues are instrumental to build the transitions necessary to address the climate and biodiversity challenges. Today, with the signing of this MOU, we want to bring our partnership to new heights, and to broaden its scope by introducing innovative financing schemes such as carbon credits”.
“Collaboration is key to addressing the climate crisis. Over the past years GGGI and AFD together have collaborate successful through public private dialogue in partner countries in the delivery of Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) in multiple countries in Africa, the Pacific. This is a critical step in supporting nations to establish pathways that align their development trajectories with both low-carbon and climate-resilient futures,” Mr. Sang-Hyup Kim, Director-General of GGGI, said. “I look forward to continuing our collaboration to address the climate crisis in a way that drive impactful efforts.” Mr. Kim added.
Moving forward, GGGI and AFD will advance the collaboration through joint advisory services and publications, including green investment and feasibility studies. It will also continue to prioritize capacity-building programs and knowledge sharing on innovative green solutions.
