Improving Access to Water and Sanitation for millions in Ethiopia

Ethiopia
World Toilet Day on November 19 highlights the dangers of lacking sanitary facilities, and the search for sustainable solutions. With an estimated 419 million people practising "open defecation" worldwide, the need for access to clean, safe toilets for all is more urgent than ever. Which is why AFD is funding a number of initiatives, including two flagship projects in Ethiopia. One will provide 2.6 million people with improved, gender-sensitive sanitation facilities and the second will improve access to water for 1 million people in 45 towns.

Lebanon: Rebuilding the Economy from the Ground Up

In the second-largest city, Tripoli, known as “the poorest city in the Mediterranean,” we look at its mounting difficulties and the work being done to overcome them, including initiatives to provide training and donate equipment to small companies.

The Choose Africa initiative has been so successful in supporting African companies and entrepreneurs that it has led to a sequel. In line with France’s commitment to renew its relations with African countries, AFD and its partner Bpifrance will help build and reinforce public banks for entrepreneurs as part of an effort to promote the development of entire entrepreneurial ecosystems across the African continent.

Overhauling Bangladesh’s Factories, 10 Years on from the Rana Plaza Disaster

The collapse of a factory complex in Bangladesh ten years ago, which killed more than 1100 people, was a stark reminder of the deadly conditions in which factory workers produced name-brand clothing for consumers around the world. Since then, factories have made major improvements to worker safety and well-being, with support from AFD and other European development agencies. Ten years on from the Rana Plaza disaster, we take stock of one major initiative.
