In Kenya, digital platforms like M-Tiba allow people to save money on their phone and pay for healthcare treatment at a distance – crucial at a time where health officials call for as much “social distancing” as possible. The system allows health data to be transmitted anonymously, so health authorities can spot trends and try to prepare for a major outbreak.

As part of a new initiative launched by the French President and his African peers, Agence Française de Développement announces the launch of “COVID-19 – Health in Common” – a €1.2 billion initiative in response to the worldwide public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This French program is part of a European effort to mount a targeted, partnership-based response to this unprecedented crisis facing developing countries. It complements the work of multilateral and European donors, and prioritizes the African continent.

Clarification on the APHRO-COV Project with INSERM

AFD is funding, along with INSERM, a system to improve health surveillance and care for suspected cases of Covid-19 in five African countries (Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Mali and Sénégal). This system – called “Aphro-Cov” – has no connection whatsoever with the controversy generated by a news segment broadcast on French television channel LCI, on Thursday, April 2, 2020.
