Generating Good Governance as part of the Long Path to More Open Societies

Even the noblest of government policies make little headway if the administrative rules, regulations and functionality are brittle. Governance is key in ensuring that the rule of law prevails, it helps in the responsible financing of development policies, and helps governments pave the path towards more just and open societies.
A Sustainable Development Goal in its own right, robust governance is something public development banks must respect in their own institutions to be effective, and which they can help hone in partner countries.
In short, governance structures the functioning of any collective entity.
In an international context heavily affected by ecological crises, democratic decline, inequalities and the ambiguous benefits of digital technology, governance methods are being tested. They must evolve while guaranteeing a secure framework to deal with the many instabilities and societal changes.

In response to these challenges, AFD is investing in an institutional, political and civic environment capable of strengthening trust within societies and promoting fair and sustainable development. Nearly €7.8 billion has been invested in grants and loans since 2016 in some 50 countries.
It supports projects that aim to:

- Strengthen the rule of law and public action
- Support the financing of sustainable development policies
