Support for geothermal exploration (Menengai)

This project promotes Kenyan growth in low carbon through the development of renewable energy by supporting geothermal exploration.

Context

Le Kenya éprouve aujourd’hui des difficultés à satisfaire la croissance de la demande en électricité et est obligé de recourir à des productions d’urgence très coûteuses. Entièrement dépendant des importations pour les énergies fossiles, le pays dispose pourtant de ressources en énergies renouvelables importantes, notamment dans le domaine de la géothermie avec un potentiel estimé à 7 000 mégawatts.

Cependant, le développement de la géothermie, malgré sa technologie maîtrisée et ses atouts environnementaux, reste limité du fait de l’importance des investissements et des risques liés aux phases d’exploration et de forage. La Geothermal Development Company (GDC) a été établie pour porter la responsabilité des investissements publics et réduire le risque d’exploration.

Description

The € 56 million project finances two components:

Support for the achievement of a master plan highlighting the potential of renewable energies;
Support to the GDC with institutional support and the purchase of two drilling platforms.

Impacts

This funding will support the development of renewable energy in Kenya by:

Contributing to the financing of geothermal exploration of a 400 megawatt project in Menengai and future sites developed by GDC;
Providing better understanding of renewable generation potential in Kenya;
Improving planning tools and promoting better integration of renewable energies.

This project contributes to the Kenyan Government's sustainable development goals.
