Musanze is the most dynamic city after Kigali, and the country's second most populous. Musanze benefits from its proximity to Rwanda's northern and western borders, as well as from its position at the entrance to the Volcanoes National Park, and boasts a strong demographic and economic dynamic, leading to a significant increase in healthcare needs.
The hospital which was built between the 30s and 80s appears out of step with the authorities' ambitions, and the desire for a modern facility capable of attracting border residents and tourists.
For these reasons, the Rwandan authorities would like to see a new facility with greater accommodation capacity, modern technical facilities and training resources that are not yet available outside Kigali or Huye.
To this end, and with the support of French technical expertise, a complete reconstruction project has been set up to double the hospital's accommodation and treatment capacity.
The first phase, which is the subject of the present financing, aims to
support the construction of 550 beds, 8 operating theatres and a simple radiology platform. The aim now is to complete the construction of the maternity unit, which now accounts for 50% of the hospital's activity.
This project will enable :
- Double accommodation capacity (550 beds) ;
- Triple the number of operating theatres (8 operating theatres) ;
- An advanced imaging platform ;
- An overhaul of the medical project and its features (with a strong focus on gender and climate issues).
In this way, the project should have a significant impact on balanced territorial development, strengthening the local economy, reducing gender inequality and building resilience to climate change.
