Banks and financial institutions play a direct role in reducing inequality, improving access to essential services, and tackling climate change.

AFD works together with financial system stakeholders in emerging and developing countries to build a new model of sustainable finance. This model aims to meet three challenges: promoting finance that is accessible to as many people as possible; redirecting investments toward sustainable development; and building strong, resilient financial systems that can withstand shocks.

To reduce economic, geographic, social, and gender inequalities, we support the development of microfinance and the financing of the agricultural and rural sector. We invest in financial innovation and digital finance, particularly in rural areas, to promote financial inclusion and provide solutions tailored to local needs. To combat climate change and its effects, we combine financial assistance with technical support to encourage changes in practices and build strategic partnerships with public development banks.
