Nationally and internationally there is agreement on the need to reduce carbon emissions and to transition to low carbon economies.
As the largest country on the African continent in terms of both CO2 emissions and willingness to commit to a low-carbon pathway, South Africa has a key role to play, but it must plan its carbon exit strategy in a context of high socioeconomic inequality and social tensions that have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
While there is consensus on the need for a just transition, debates in the country around the design and implementation of such a strategy show that the final objective is not sufficiently defined. In this webinar we will be discussing the role that social policies can play in enabling a just transition in South Africa and highlight some of the key challenges.
