As global warming worsens, Vietnam is increasingly exposed to the adverse impact of extreme events, specifically typhoons with a long coastline and densely populated coastal cities.

Our research looks at the historical impact of typhoons on the economic activities of Vietnam using night-time luminosity from 1993 to 2018. It mitigates the imprecision posed by traditional methods in the literature that relies on survey data and provides a refreshed take at the issue. How are our findings compared to the existing literature? How much loss has the economy endured? In addition, we investigate the use of wind field models that approximate the impact of typhoon using wind speed. This work is part of the GEMMES Vietnam project.
