On 6 February 2020, AFD and Paris 2024 signed a cooperation agreement to initiate and support projects that combine sport and sustainable development, in France and around the world. The two organizations have thereby realized a common ambition: use the energy of the Games for the benefit of all. Building on the success of its first Sport and Development calls for projects, AFD is renewing this initiative through its partnership with Paris 2024, in association with the European Guild and the Sport en Commun platform.
The calls for projects serve to finance small-scale initiatives led by local organizations, or French CSOs in partnership with a local organization, primarily targeting young people. They focus on equality and inclusion, citizenship and community life, child protection, as well as education, health, environmental conservation, and training and vocational integration, transmitting the values of the Olympics and civic engagement conveyed through sport.
The project has three components:
- The creation of a financing mechanism for sport and development initiatives in Africa
- The creation of a mechanism to help structure projects
- Capitalization on the initiatives to develop a set of good practices and successful initiatives
In 2024, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has extended Impact 2024 International by launching the Sustain Insight and Impact program. This program is providing additional financing to about ten flagship associations for Impact 2024 International and is part of the international legacy of the Paris Games.
- 45 projects have been financed in 19 African countries through 4 calls for projects
