This project supports preparation for the 2030 Mediterranean Games in Kosovo by renovating and expanding the University of Pristina student campus and improving sports facilities in 13 schools. The goal is to use the event to support social, environmental, and economic development.
Context
Kosovo was selected to host the 2030 Mediterranean Games in September 2023, with Pristina as the main host city. The country lacks modern sports and student infrastructure despite a young population with strong demand. The project addresses these needs while supporting the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
Descriptif
The project aims to: (1) improve living, learning, and sports conditions for students and schoolchildren in Pristina; (2) support delivery of an international sports event.
Main actions:
• Renovate student residences, the canteen, and sports facilities at the University of Pristina, and build new facilities including student housing, a health center, offices, a semi-Olympic swimming pool, and multi-purpose spaces. The campus will temporarily become the Athletes’ Village in 2030.
• Renovate 13 sports facilities used by schools and universities for training during the Games (12 school gymnasiums and one university Improvements focus on energy efficiency, safety, accessibility, inclusion, and alignment with EU standards.
The total cost is estimated at €70 million. AFD will provide a €60 million sovereign loan and €1.2 million in technical assistance, alongside funding from Kosovo and/or European sources. International tenders will be launched for the recruitment of consultants responsible for infrastructure design, construction supervision, project technical assistance, as well as for the procurement of construction contractors.
Impacts
More than 40,000 students and schoolchildren will benefit directly. The project will modernize infrastructure, improve student conditions, expand access to sport, and increase Pristina’s visibility. It will leave a lasting legacy in the social, educational and urban sectors.
