IMPROVING ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE

1.2 billion people in the world do not have access to electricity. This problem of access impacts the health and education of populations and affects economic competitiveness by inhibiting development in these countries.
In order to promote the fairest and most sustainable lifestyles and production methods, AFD supports its partners in their energy transition through different forms of funding, adapted technical support and a wide partnership network.

STRENGTHENING ACCESS TO WATER AND SANITATION

Water is a major challenge of the 21st century. It is a vital resource that needs to be protected and managed for the benefit of all. This is the prevailing vision in the very large number of projects for access to water and sanitation which AFD supports around the world.

For example, we:

  • Assist in the definition of clear and effective sectoral frameworks to support our partners beyond the funded projects
  • Finance the construction and rehabilitation of drinking water production infrastructure, with a priority focus on precarious neighborhoods and areas of urban sprawl
  • Promote integrated water resources management (IWRM) to meet the strong increase in demand. The objective: sustainably manage water resources and preserve their quantity (projects to reduce losses and waste, initiatives to renew aquifers) and quality (construction of domestic water treatment plants and industrial effluent treatment plants)
  • Work on flood risk management. Our strategy is based on three complementary and interconnected principles: prevention, preparation and the culture of risk.

DEPLOYING DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND SUPPORTING INNOVATORS

Digital technologies and innovation renew the options for access to essential services, open up societies to new knowledge and make the economy more collaborative. These are all opportunities to speed up development paths and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Starting from the observation that technological innovation, and in particular digital innovation, is a factor of wealth creation and that it enables new solutions to be designed in favour of sustainable development, AFD is supporting its partners in their digital and technological transition. Our goal is to make digital technology, technology transfer and cross innovation assets that will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), whilst reducing inequality of access.
