Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) join forces to strengthen prevention and response to gender-based violence in Cabo Delgado
The Agence Française de Développement (AFD), under its Minka Fund for Peace and Resilience, together with the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), have officially signed the financing agreement for the implementation of the project entitled Protection, Learning and Care against Gender-Based Violence (PAZ).
With a total investment of €6.3 million over four years (€6 million funded by AFD and €0.3 million by AKF), the project represents a significant commitment to promoting gender equality, strengthening protection systems and promoting inclusive education. The project will be implemented in Cabo Delgado province, specifically in the district of Montepuez, by the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and its partners, namely Médicos com África - CUAMM and the GirlMove Mozambique Association. The PAZ project aims to strengthen the empowerment of adolescent girls, reducing gender inequalities through inclusive education and community-led prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV).
Cabo Delgado continues to face the exacerbated effects of conflict, displacement, poverty and climate shocks, with women and children disproportionately affected. In this context, PAZ will provide an integrated and conflict-sensitive response through:
- Strengthening systems for the prevention of gender-based violence and survivor-centred responses within health, justice and protection services;
- Improving safety and inclusion in 109 schools in the district of Montepuez;
- Training teachers, school leaders and gender focal points in adapted teaching methods that address safeguarding competencies;
- Mobilising around 60 communities to address social norms that hinder girls’ education and promote better learning opportunities for girls.
- Support for youth mentoring programmes to strengthen girls’ retention, autonomy and leadership.
The project is expected to directly benefit over 20,000 people and indirectly reach over 150,000 people through the strengthening of services, community mobilisation and the implementation of awareness-raising campaigns.
The signing ceremony brought together representatives from the French Embassy, AFD, the Government of Mozambique, consortium partners and stakeholders in integrated community development, marking a shared commitment to development in Cabo Delgado.
Through this project, AFD and AKF are supporting the government’s efforts to finance and implement initiatives that help reduce social inequalities.
