Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In 2015, every country in the world agreed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight against inequalities and injustices, tackle climate change and build a common world by 2030.

These SDGs were adopted on 25 September 2015 in New York, during the United Nations General Assembly, and officially take over from the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

What is new about them? They are interdependent universal goals which are equally applicable to the USA as they are to Peru or Chad. This vision shared by the whole world on the direction to take for the next 15 years is promising. It calls for the mobilization of everyone: international community, States, NGOs, local authorities, companies and citizens.

We are at the dawn of a new era, in which AFD aims to fully play its role.

The 17 goals
#1
POVERTY
SDG 1 POVERTY

"End poverty in all its forms everywhere."

As part of the Demographic and Social Transition, the great majority of the projects that we fund fall within the scope of this SDG: our actions help to improve access to essential services (health and social protection, education, water and sanitation, energy) and to reduce inequality, including gender inequality.

#2
HUNGER AND FOOD
SDG 2 HUNGER AND FOOD SECURITY

"End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture."

In the context of the Territorial and Ecological Transition, AFD is backing sustainable agriculture, the improvement of the productive capacity of small-scale farming and the development of rural infrastructure. In this way, we are working to promote the autonomy, durability and resilience of the agricultural sector.

#3
HEALTH
SDG 3 GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

"Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages."

In the context of the Demographic and Social Transition, AFD is taking action to guarantee access to good-quality healthcare and health cover for all and to reduce infant and maternal mortality. We envisage the development of healthcare paying close attention to the demographic, economic and environmental challenges.

#4
EDUCATION
SDG 4 EDUCATION

"Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning."

In the context of the Demographic and Social Transition, AFD acts to guarantee access to quality education for all: from primary to higher education, from vocational training to employment.

#5
GENDER EQUALITY
SDG 5 GENDER EQUALITY

"Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls."

In the context of the Demographic and Social Transition, AFD takes account of gender issues in all the projects that it supports and promotes gender equality in all the sectors and countries where it operates.

#6
WATER AND SANITATION
SDG 6 WATER AND SANITATION

"Ensure access to sustainably managed water and sanitation for all."

In the context of the Territorial and Ecological Transition, AFD helps to improve the management of resources and guarantee universal access to water and sanitation.

#7
ENERGY
SDG 7 ENERGY

"Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all."

In the context of the Energy Transition, AFD supports its partners with a view to guaranteeing universal access to reliable, efficient and low-carbon energy services.

#8
EMPLOYMENT AND SHARED PROSPERITY
SDG 8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

"Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all."

In the context of the Economic and Financial Transition, AFD encourages job creation policies and the participation of the private sector. It promotes dialogue with all the stakeholders to improve working conditions and knowledge of the job market and to develop programmes that meet local needs. At the same time, we support the introduction of lifelong learning systems.

#9
INFRASTRUCTURE
SDG 9 INFRASTRUCTURE

"Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation."

In the context of the Digital and Technological Transition, AFD supports numerous projects in the fields of transport, energy and new technologies. Promoting sustainable industrialisation and encouraging innovation are core priorities for us.

#10
INEQUALITIES
SDG 10 INEQUALITY

"Reduce inequality within and among countries."

In the context of the Demographic and Social Transition, AFD acts in all areas and at all levels to promote fairer, more equitable development.

#11
SUSTAINABLE CITIES
SDG 11 SUSTAINABLE CITIES

"Make cities and communities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable."

In the context of the Territorial and Ecological Transition, AFD supports the development of sustainable cities, cities open to all that are safe, efficient and resilient. Cities that provide fair and equal access to essential services, low-carbon, efficient means of transport and employment and that reduce the insecurity and vulnerability of their inhabitants.

#12
SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
SDG 12 SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION

"Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns."

In the context of the Economic and Financial Transition, AFD encourages better management of natural resources and acts in favour of sustainable and ecological rural development.

At the same time, we support economic and financial actors that are committed to a responsible, ethical and transparent approach.

#13
CLIMATE
SDG 13 CLIMATE CHANGE

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

In the context of the Territorial and Ecological Transition, the AFD has made the climate a priority and intends to become a development bank that is "100% compatible with the Paris Agreement". We support climate change mitigation and impact reduction projects and accompany the introduction of low-carbon, resilient development trajectories.

#14
OCEANS
SDG 14 OCEANS

"Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development."

In the context of the Territorial and Ecological Transition, AFD acts with its partners to protect marine and coastal ecosystems, to sustainably manage resources and to support the fishing and fish-farming sectors.

#15
FORESTS AND BIODIVERSITY
SDG 15 FORESTS AND BIODIVERSITY

"Preserve and restore land ecosystems, by ensuring they are sustainably exploited, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss."

In the context of the Territorial and Ecological Transition, AFD supports the preservation, restoration, sustainable management and enhancement of natural areas and integrates this dimension into all its development policies.

#16
PEACE AND JUSTICE
SDG 16 PEACE AND JUSTICE

"Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels."

In the context of the Political and Civic Transition, AFD acts on three main pillars: respect for human rights, support for populations affected by conflict and transparent and participatory State governance.

#17
GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS
SDG 17 GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS

"Strengthen the means to implement the global partnership for sustainable development and revitalize it."

The achievement of the SDGs requires the mobilisation of all the resources and actors available. In the context of the Political and Civic Transition, AFD prioritises partnership-based solutions and collective responses, as co-funding multiplies the effects of interventions and can make more ambitious projects possible. Half of our projects are already co-funded with other development actors.
